Continuous Provision

At Mulgrave Primary School, we understand that the transition from Early Years into Key Stage 1 is a significant step in a child’s learning journey. To support this transition, our Year 1 classrooms embrace a continuous provision approach —bridging the gap between play-based learning and more formal curriculum delivery.

Albert Einstein once said, “Play is the highest form of research.” We wholeheartedly agree. In Year 1, children continue to learn through purposeful, child-initiated play, complemented by small, focused adult-led sessions. This balanced approach allows us to deliver the National Curriculum in a way that feels familiar, engaging, and developmentally appropriate.

Each day, children have access to a range of thoughtfully curated resources and learning areas within the classroom. These spaces are designed to spark curiosity, promote independence, and challenge children to think critically, solve problems, and collaborate with others. As the term progresses and children grow in confidence and capability, our provision gradually becomes more structured—preparing them for the fully formalised learning model in Year 2.

Our aim is to ensure that every child feels secure, inspired, and ready to succeed. By honouring the principles of play while embedding high expectations, we create a nurturing environment where children continue to thrive—learning, believing, and succeeding every step of the way.
