British Values at Mulgrave Primary School
At Mulgrave Primary School, we are proud to actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. These values are woven into our curriculum, our ethos, and our daily practice—supporting every child to learn, believe, and succeed.
We recognise our responsibility to nurture pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development as part of a broad and balanced education. Our commitment to British values is not just about meeting statutory expectations—it’s about preparing children to thrive as thoughtful, respectful citizens in modern Britain and beyond.
We also embed the principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) across school life, ensuring that children’s rights are understood, respected, and upheld. These values are universal, shared across many cultures and communities, and help us build a school where every child is seen, celebrated, and empowered to succeed. We are working towards our ‘Rights Respecting School Award’.
Celebrating Our Place in Britain
At Mulgrave, we celebrate the rich diversity of our school community and the heritage of the area we serve. We encourage children to take pride in where they live, to understand their local history, and to explore how it connects to the wider national story. Through our curriculum, children learn about:
- Britain’s capital cities, counties, rivers and mountains
- The difference between England, Great Britain, and the United Kingdom
- Britain’s place in Europe and the wider world
- Key historical events that have shaped our national identity
- We mark national celebrations, festivals, and commemorations, helping children understand what it means to be part of Britain today.
How We Promote British Values
Democracy
- Democracy is central to life at Mulgrave. We ensure that every child has a voice and feels heard. Examples include:
- School Parliament and pupil-led initiatives
- Class charters created collaboratively
- Voting for certificates, charities, and leadership roles
- Opportunities to reflect on learning and share feedback
- Roles such as Playground Buddies, Sports Leaders, and Anti-Bullying Ambassadors
- Children learn to listen respectfully, express their views, and understand that their opinions matter.
Individual Liberty
We promote freedom of choice and the right to express beliefs respectfully. Within a safe and supportive environment, children are encouraged to:
- Understand and exercise their rights
- Make informed choices in learning and play
- Explore personal freedoms through PSHE and e-safety lessons
- Participate in themed weeks such as Anti-Bullying Week
- We help children grow in confidence, independence, and responsibility.
Mutual Respect and Tolerance
Respect is a cornerstone of our school culture and our first school rule. We celebrate the many faiths, cultures, and backgrounds represented in our community, and teach children to value difference. This is reflected in:
- Religious Education and PSHE lessons
- Community-themed events with the support from our parent led cultural committee
- Literature and art from around the world
- Assemblies and discussions that promote empathy and understanding
Children learn that their actions affect others, and that kindness and respect are essential to building a fair and inclusive society.
Rule of Law
From the earliest years, children learn about rules, fairness, and responsibility. We reinforce this through:
- Clear behaviour expectations and restorative approaches
- Visits from police, fire services, and other authorities
- Lessons exploring laws in different faiths and contexts
- Respect for rules in sport, travel, and public life
- Working towards the Unicef ‘Rights Respecting School Award’
Children understand that laws protect everyone and that they have a role in upholding them.
At Mulgrave, British values are not just taught—they are lived. They underpin our vision of “Every Child a Success” and help us create a school where every learner is prepared to contribute positively to society, now and in the future.
