Outdoor Learning & Forest School at Mulgrave
At Mulgrave Primary School, we believe that nature is one of the most powerful teachers. Our extensive outdoor grounds—including a large, dedicated Forest School space overlooking a tranquil lake—offer children the chance to immerse themselves in the natural world, sparking curiosity, creativity, and confidence.
Outdoor learning is central to our ethos of Every Child a Success. It supports holistic development—nurturing children’s physical health, emotional wellbeing, social skills, and academic growth. Whether they’re climbing, building, exploring, or simply sitting quietly by the water, children learn to take risks, solve problems, and connect deeply with the world around them.
Our Forest School is a rich, living classroom filled with trees, logs, rocks, and wildlife. It’s a place where children can dig, discover, and delight in the changing seasons. Overlooking the lake, the space invites calm reflection as well as energetic exploration—helping children regulate emotions, build resilience, and develop a lifelong respect for the environment.
Forest School is more than just outdoor play. It’s an evidence-based approach to learning that fosters independence, teamwork, and self-esteem through hands-on experiences in nature. Sessions are led by trained staff and tailored to each age group—from nursery children searching for minibeasts to Year 6 pupils learning fire safety and bushcraft skills.
At Mulgrave, outdoor learning isn’t a treat—it’s a right. We ensure that every child has regular access to our Forest School, because we know that when children feel free, grounded, and inspired, they truly learn, believe, and succeed.
